Embracing Joy: Trusting Each Moment

As I prepared for the Community Walk this morning, I landed on the theme JOY.  Joy has felt a little elusive to me lately, a fleeting emotion often tied to external circumstances and material achievements. Yet, true joy is much deeper and more enduring. As I explored the essence of joy, it became clear that it is an inside job, rooted in how we perceive and engage with each moment.

Every morning while enjoying my coffee, I read a short daily meditation out of the book, Journey to the Heart by  Melody Beattie.  This was part of today’s message;

 

“Joy comes from trusting each moment. That’s the secret of joy. Receive it now then pass it on with a smile and a kind word to tell all who come along your path.”

 

This beautiful quote encapsulates a profound truth about joy: it is found in the trust and acceptance of each present moment. When we trust that each moment holds value and meaning, we open ourselves up to experiencing joy in its purest form.

Is there a difference between joy and happiness?  It’s essential to distinguish between joy and happiness. While happiness often depends on external events—a promotion, a new purchase, a fun outing—joy is an inner state of being. Joy remains steady and resilient, even when external circumstances fluctuate. Happiness can be fleeting, but joy endures, anchored in the present moment.

One powerful way to cultivate joy is through mindfulness. By being fully present and engaged in the here and now, we can uncover joy in the simplest of things: the warmth of the sun on our skin, the sound of birdsong, the taste of a favorite meal. Mindfulness helps us appreciate these small moments, weaving a tapestry of joy throughout our daily lives.

I find so much joy in nature!  Whether it’s a hike through the woods, a stroll along the beach, or simply sitting in a park, nature offers us countless opportunities to connect with our inner joy. The beauty and tranquility of natural surroundings invite us to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the world around us.

How do you Practice JOY?

  1. Gratitude: Practicing gratitude is a powerful way to nurture joy. By focusing on what we are thankful for, we shift our attention from what is lacking to what is abundant in our lives. Try keeping a gratitude journal, noting down three things that bring you joy each day.
  2. Acts of Kindness: Spreading joy to others is a surefire way to enhance our own. Simple acts of kindness, like offering a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand, not only brighten someone else’s day but also fill our hearts with joy.  Everytime I walk, I offer a smile and say hello to all those who pass me by.
  3. Engaging in Hobbies: Doing things we love, whether it’s painting, dancing, cycling,  gardening, or cooking, brings us joy. These activities allow us to express ourselves and connect with our passions.
  4. Mindful Breathing: Take a few moments each day to focus on your breath. Inhale deeply, welcoming joy into your heart, and exhale, letting go of stress and negativity.  Seven/Eleven breathing really helps.  Count of seven in, count of eleven out.  (You can also try ā…¯ or ā…— - do what works for you).

 

Can you find joy in challenging times?  Even during challenging times, it is possible to find joy. It may not be as apparent, but by trusting each moment and seeking out small joys, we can navigate difficulties with a lighter heart. Reflecting on past challenges can reveal moments of joy that carried us through, reminding us of our resilience and inner strength.

Passing it on - As the quote suggests, receiving joy is just the beginning. Passing it on amplifies its impact. When we share our joy with others, we create a ripple effect, spreading positivity and kindness. A smile, a kind word, a compassionate gesture—all these small acts can transform someone’s day and foster a community of joy.

Joy is not a destination but a journey, a way of being that we cultivate through trust, mindfulness, and gratitude. By embracing each moment with an open heart, we can discover the joy that resides within us and share it generously with those around us. Let’s commit to receiving joy now and passing it on, creating a world where joy is abundant and accessible to all.
